What we help with

If it plugs in and nobody can figure it out, we can help.

Ask anything you like. We'll explain what we're doing while we do it.

Wi-Fi that reaches the whole house

Dead spots, a router in the wrong place, a network nobody can get onto. We fix the coverage first, before anybody tells you to buy faster internet.

TVs, streaming and “where did my channel go”

Getting a new TV going, tidying up the apps, and making the remote situation sane again. Then we show you the three buttons you need.

Computers that have gotten slow or strange

Slow, cluttered, full of things you didn't install. We'll clean it up, get it current, and set up a backup that runs on its own.

Phones and tablets, set up your way

Setting up a new one, moving everything across, photos, passwords, and making the text bigger without breaking anything.

Learning it at your own pace

Some visits are all teaching, and that suits us fine. We go through it with you until it makes sense and you can do it on your own.

Printers that won't print

It worked yesterday and today the computer can't find it. That's a common problem, it's not something you did, and we can fix it.

Doorbells, cameras and smart home gear

Doorbells, cameras, speakers, thermostats and lights, set up so they notify the right phone and you can find them when you need them.

Scams, pop-ups and “is this email real?”

Pop-ups, fake warnings, emails that want you to click. We'll clear it out and show you what to look for so the next one doesn't get you.

Local to McAlester

What tech help looks like around here.

Southeast Oklahoma is rugged country. Around Lake Eufaula and up into the Kiamichi Mountains, a lot of households are on satellite or fixed wireless, which behaves differently from cable and needs to be set up differently. We'll tell you what your connection can and can't do, and we won't sell you gear that won't help.

We love making it easy

Patient, unhurried help, especially for the 55+ crowd.

Lake Eufaula has drawn retirees for decades, and a lot of them are a long way from the nearest place to get help. Remote sessions work well here, and we'll stay on the phone until it works.

Questions

What people in McAlester ask us.

Do you make house calls in McAlester?

Yes. A Local Nerd drives in for house calls, and a visit in McAlester is $110 an hour, shown before you book. Krebs, Hartshorne, Kiowa, Canadian and Quinton are in that first band too, and Eufaula, Clayton and Stringtown are $130. Wilburton, Talihina, Poteau and the Kiamichi towns east of them are remote for now, by phone and screen share. With the distances out here, remote is still the fastest fix for anything that isn't hardware.

I'm on satellite internet. Can you still help remotely?

Usually, yes. Satellite has more lag, so screen sharing feels slower, but it works. If your connection is too poor for a screen share, we'll talk you through it by phone.

How much does tech help cost in McAlester?

Remote help is $39 for a 30-minute session. In-person visits are $110 an hour within 25 miles of downtown McAlester and $130 in the 25 to 50 mile band, and the higher rate is how we pay for the drive. Some addresses are served remotely today, or by a drive from a neighboring Local Nerd. Type your ZIP when you book and you'll see the answer for your address. A $39 deposit books an in-person visit and the rest is charged after your Local Nerd finishes and you sign off on the work. Nerd on Call membership is $14.99 a month and includes two remote sessions and an in-person visit a year, plus 20% off anything extra. You always agree to the rate before we start.

Do you help older adults in McAlester with technology?

Yes. One-on-one help for older adults is work we like. We go at your pace, and we'll write the steps down for you to keep.

Do you fix broken devices, or just set things up?

We do. Most of what people call broken is a setting, an update, an account or a connection, and we fix those. Screens, batteries, parts and data recovery from a failed drive are somebody else's job, and we'll tell you that up front.
